Repeated high flows drive morphological change in rivers in recently deglaciated catchments

چکیده
Climate change is decreasing glacier cover and increasing the frequency magnitude of precipitation-driven high flows floods in many regions world. Precipitation may become dominant water source for river systems recently deglaciated catchments, with major rainfall events driving significant changes channel morphology. Few studies, however, have examined response to repeated flows. In this study, we measured geomorphological condition four low-order rivers catchments (70–210 years ice free) before after a series during summer 2014. High drove substantial initial morphological change, up 75% baseflow planform position active form from pre- post-high flow. Post-high flow were associated increased instream wood complexity at all but youngest river. Channel part an relaxation stage rivers, where channels continued migrate, varied through time. Overall, these measurements permit us propose conceptual model role geomorphologically effective context paraglacial adjustment theory. Specifically, suggest that older can undergo short-term (<10 years) increase rate development as result recruitment migration following Enhancing our knowledge processes important management riverine ecosystem resources rapidly changing environments.

Regional Analysis Low Flows in the Karkheh and Karoon Catchments
Analysis of low flow is one of the important considerations in any water resource project. Meanwhile, as a general idea it seems that flow control is more important than drought mitigation but it is necessary to pay more attention to drought problem in future projects. In this paper, available data for 28 selected watersheds were analyzed and then Flow Duration Curve was drew, and discharge of ...

Contrasting climate change impact on river flows from high-altitude catchments in the Himalayan and Andes Mountains.
Mountain ranges are the world's natural water towers and provide water resources for millions of people. However, their hydrological balance and possible future changes in river flow remain poorly understood because of high meteorological variability, physical inaccessibility, and the complex interplay between climate, cryosphere, and hydrological processes. Here, we use a state-of-the art glac...
متن کاملThe earliest stages of ecosystem succession in high-elevation (5000 metres above sea level), recently deglaciated soils.
Global climate change has accelerated the pace of glacial retreat in high-latitude and high-elevation environments, exposing lands that remain devoid of vegetation for many years. The exposure of 'new' soil is particularly apparent at high elevations (5000 metres above sea level) in the Peruvian Andes, where extreme environmental conditions hinder plant colonization. Nonetheless, these seemingl...
متن کاملThe influence of stream age and environmental variables in structuring meiofaunal assemblages in recently deglaciated streams
The influence of stream age and environmental variables on meiofaunal assemblages were examined for 15 streams across a temporal gradient of 200 yr in Glacier Bay National Park, southeast Alaska. Meiofaunal assemblages were found in all streams but varied in diversity and abundance. Copepod species found had a wide range of habitat affinities and good dispersal abilities; we argue that the obse...
